Thru-hike gear shopping… Patience has been paying off, literally. How much money I’ve spent or saved so far…?

Thru-hike gear shopping… Patience has been paying off, literally. How much money I’ve spent or saved so far…?

Today I started wondering how much money I have spent on gear so far since I have decided to thru-hike.
The original goal was to leave for the Continental Divide Trail this year, but since I decided to pursue my Masters in Public Administration before leaving for a trail, things got changed to the Appalachian Trail NOBO 2018. I started looking around for things since 2016, so I was okay and not feeling rushed to see what was out there.

I usually wait for sales, coupons, and clearance events. I find that during June-July and December-January are the best times to shop for gear, obviously it is because new things are coming up as well as different sports in given season. Do you have some good websites? Please let me know!

Camp Saver – This is probably one of my favourite websites. It has free standard shipping, no taxes, and I’d highly recommend signing up for emails. Usually they ave 10-20% off clearance prices and sometimes even free gifts with purchase. That’s how I got the Big Agnes footprint when I bought the Tent and used a 10% coupon. That alone saved me $188!

Moosejaw Madness – Hmmm.. Well… this USED to be my favourite website, however, the company just sold out to… Walmart. To me it was highly disappointing and I am no longer supporting this company. Buuuuut… if you are a college student, military, or first responder, you can sign up for IDMe and get 20% full price items. They also have some good cashback deals and sales.

6pm – This website you kinda have to “shop around”, they allow you to make a wishlist and keep track of sales, price drops and such. They do coupons often, so you can get some things at a real good price, they have free shipping after a certain amount as well, but at least in New York, there are sale taxes.

Backcountry – Same with 6pm, sometimes you need to wait for coupons or sales, when I started shopping at this site, there was no sales taxes, now they do, so they need to really have a good sale before I buy anything.

Amazon – Good ol’ friend Amazon, again, look around, check for daily deals…

Mountain Steals – This site usually have 20% off extra on sale stuff, and such, good for clothing, they don’t really have much as far as gear.

I also use a lot of Ebates and ActiveJunky for my extra cashback and coupon codes.

Disclaimer: These are my favourite websites and opinions, I have absolutely nothing to do with them.

So here it is so far – If you need to see the picture bigger, click here.
Note: Just because the item is on this list, it does not mean that it will be on my final gear list – these are the items I’ve purchase so far with the intention to thru-hike.
